Early Years
Anke and Chris Ohanian welcomed Alexis Kerry into the world on April 24, 1983, in Brooklyn, New York. After the Armenian Genocide, his grandparents fled to the United States and settled there. Ohanian went to Ellicott City, Maryland’s Howard High School. At his 2001 graduation, he addressed the graduates.

In 2005, Reddit was accepted by ‘Y Combinator as a startup. He continued to work with Reddit as a co-founder alongside Huffman and remained a board member.
In 2007, Alexis released the album Breadpig. He founded the company, which is now operating independently without his participation. In 2010, he spent three months in Armenia working in microfinance for the non-profit organization Kiva, which lends money online to small business owners and students in more than 80 countries.

In 2007, Ohanian founded Breadpig, an online company that finds, develops, and markets “geeky” products, and then donates all of its profits to organizations in need of financial assistance, such as the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Room to Read, a program working to build a primary school in Laos.
Since its 2007 launch, the website has raised over $150,000. He no longer participates in the daily operations of Breadpig. He is also the marketing director for the online travel agency Hipmunk. In 2010, Ohanian co-founded Initialized Capital and made seed investments totaling over $500 million in startups including Instacart, Opendoor, Zenefits, and Cruise. CB Insights ranked Ohanian as the top investor for network centrality in 2014. In 2019, Alexis invested $3 million in the early-stage childcare startup Kingside, also through his company Initialized Capital.
Other Activities
Ohanian and Lester Chambers of The Chamber Brothers launched a Kickstarter campaign in December 2012 to create a new album titled “Lester’s Time Has Come.” It brought in over $61,000. Two years later, Ohanian used Tilt.com to raise $12,244 for the non-profit Black Girls Code.
On October 1, 2013, Ohanian published the book “Without Their Permission: How the 21st Century Will Be Made, Not Managed.” It was ranked number four on the Wall Street Journal bestseller list. In the same year, Ohanian began hosting a weekly online series titled “Small Empires with Alexis Ohanian” for The Verge.
Ohanian collaborated with teen Rayouf Alhumedhi in 2017 to lobby Apple to include a hijab emoji. Alexis facilitated Alhumedhi’s AMA on her idea and responded to critics. Apple introduced its hijab emoji on July 17, 2017.

Activism
Ohanian is an ardent supporter of net neutrality and maintaining an open internet. Ohanian spoke out against the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Senate’s PROTECT IP Act in 2010 and 2011. Ohanian spoke to Congress, helped launch the national anti-SOPA/PIPA protests in 2012, and spoke at the New York Tech Meetup rally. The two bills were ultimately defeated as a result of Ohanian’s Internet-enabled campaign.
Ohanian also joined forces with Reddit General Manager Erik Martin and embarked on the Internet 2012 Bus Tour from Denver, CO to Danville, KY during the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates to advocate for an open Internet. In response to his advocacy for an open internet, The Daily Dot ranked Alexis first among the ten most influential activists of 2012. Additionally, Forbes Magazine awarded him the title of Internet Mayor.
Ohanian began lobbying the FCC to support net neutrality in May 2014, culminating on January 15, 2015, with a day-long phone-a-thon to the FCC and Congress. Ohanian utilized Tilt.com to launch the “Save Net Neutrality: Billboard in FCC’s Backyard” campaign, which protested the FCC’s intentions to eliminate net neutrality.
Ohanian is also an ardent supporter of paid paternity leave for all fathers. He wrote about his experience in the New York Times following the birth of his daughter after his wife nearly died during childbirth and he became the primary family caregiver. In June of 2019, he announced his intention to present federal paid family leave legislation to Capitol Hill lawmakers.
