Clarence Thomas Net Worth

Clarence Thomas is an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Clarence Thomas, according to his most recent financial disclosure, has a net worth of $1 million. As a Supreme Court justice, he earns $220,000 per year.

George H. W. Bush nominated him to the Supreme Court to succeed Thurgood Marshall. In October 1991, he was confirmed following a contentious and contentious confirmation hearing. He is the Supreme Court’s second African American justice, the first being Thurgood Marshall. Clarence is currently the Supreme Court’s longest-serving justice.

Childhood

Clarence Thomas was born in June 1948 in Pin Point, Georgia. He attended Conception Seminary College for a brief time before dropping out in the aftermath of Martin Luther King, Jr’s assassination. Thomas later stated that he left after overhearing a fellow student remark “Excellent.

I’m hoping the son of a bitch is no longer alive “, just one day after the assassination. Clarence realized as a result of this experience that the Catholic church was not doing enough to combat racism among its future priests.

He then enrolled as a sophomore at the College of the Holy Cross. He was one of the co-founders of the school’s Black Student Union. He majored in English literature and graduated with honors in 1971.

Thomas was of prime-age to be drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam during his college years. He avoided the draught through a series of deferments, but upon graduation, he was classified as 1-A, a classification reserved for men who were extremely likely to be drafted. He was summoned for a medical examination, which he failed due to spinal curvature. Due to his medical condition, he was ineligible to be drafted.

Clarence then enrolled in Yale Law School, where he graduated in the middle of his class with a Juris Doctor degree in 1974.

Private Life

From 1971 to 1984, Thomas was married to his college girlfriend Kathy Grace Ambush. They shared one child.

Thomas married Virginia Lamp, a Republican lobbyist, in 1987. Virginia, alias Ginni.

Career in Politics

Between 1979 and 1981, Thomas worked under John Danforth once more. Danforth was now a Senator, and Thomas worked as a legislative assistant on the Senate Commerce Committee, where he handled energy issues.

Thomas served as Assistant Secretary of Education for the Office of Civil Rights, a division of the United States Department of Education, in 1981. This was a Reagan Administration initiative. Thomas would later become the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s chairman.

Thomas was an outspoken opponent of affirmative action for a variety of reasons. He refused to participate in class-action lawsuits while at the EEOC. Rather than that, he pursued individual instances of discrimination. Thomas also expressed open criticism for African Americans, who, Thomas asserted, were more likely to complain about Reagan than to collaborate with him to “alleviate teenage pregnancy, unemployment, and illiteracy.” This may have played a role in Thomas’ contentious nomination to the bench.

Thomas was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., by President George H.W. Bush in 1989, and his nomination was easily confirmed. When Thurgood Marshall announced his retirement, President Bush nominated Thomas to fill the vacancy. Bush was warned, however, that replacing Marshall with an African American who “was not perceived to share Marshall’s civil rights views” would be difficult during the confirmation process. Thomas, as predicted, would face an uphill battle to be confirmed as a Justice.

While President Bush described Thomas as “the most qualified person at the moment,” feminist and civil rights organizations spoke out against the nomination. Thomas’ comments about the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and affirmative action are likely one of the reasons his nomination remains unconfirmed by the Senate.

Thomas’ confirmation hearings began in September 1991, and he maintained his composure when confronted with questions about his judicial philosophy and views on legal theory. Additionally, allegations regarding Thomas’ working relationship with Anita Hill surfaced. The confirmation hearings have been reopened. Hill testified before the Judiciary Committee, and Thomas was recalled as well.

Clarence Thomas famously stated during these hearings: “it (this hearing) is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who dare to think for themselves…it is a message (that) unless you kowtow to an old order…you will be lynched, destroyed, and caricatured by a Senate committee.”

Additionally, Thomas defended his right to privacy in light of the allegations. Ultimately, Anita Hill was the only witness to testify that Thomas made sexual remarks to her. Angela Wright, a former Thomas employee, declined to testify. She did, however, submit a written statement alleging that Thomas had once asked her out on a date and made sexual comments in her presence, but she did not feel intimidated or sexually harassed by his behavior.

Others testified on Thomas’s behalf. One was a former colleague who shared an office with Thomas and testified before the Senate Committee that she overheard “virtually everything Thomas said over two years.” She testified that she had never overheard Thomas make an obscene remark. Additionally, she stated that Thomas and Hill could not have acted in the manner described by Hill “without any of the dozens of women he worked with noticing.”

Thomas was confirmed by a vote of 52 to 48 despite the contentious confirmation hearings.

Clarence Thomas is now a quiet, staunchly conservative Supreme Court justice. He is not a frequent interviewee, speaking to the public only on rare occasions. He is widely regarded as having a sizable influence on other conservative justices. Thomas, like Chief Justice John Roberts, views the Court as an interpretive body rather than a maker of law.

During his tenure as a justice, Thomas authored nearly 700 opinions. He was the sole Justice to vote against Section Five of the 1965 Voting Rights Act – something the Left is attempting to restore with the Freedom to Vote/For the People Act, which was recently defeated in the Senate.

Supreme Court

When George H. W. Bush sought to replace Justice William Brennan on the Supreme Court in 1990, he considered Clarence Thomas but ultimately chose David Souter. When Justice Thurgood Marshall resigned a year later, Bush nominated Clarence.

Clarence’s confirmation hearings would quickly become one of the decade’s most contentious and divisive events. Sexual harassment allegations against Thomas were leaked and became headline news. Anita Hill made the allegations. Hill assisted Thomas during their tenures at the United States Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, respectively. Anita initially refrained from making the allegations public. The allegations surfaced following the leak of an FBI interview with Anita. Hill was summoned to testify following the revelation of the allegations.

Anita claimed in October 1991, during televised hearings, that Thomas sexually harassed her while he was her supervisor at two different government jobs. She claimed he asked her out repeatedly and frequently made sexually suggestive and explicit comments to her. Thomas is alleged to have boasted about “his sexual prowess” while describing his anatomy in detail.

Clarence Thomas was confirmed as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court on October 15, 1999.

Ginni Thomas and Other Subjects of Controversy

Clarence has been embroiled in controversy over Ginni Thomas’ lobbying career at various points over the years. In 2000, she was employed by the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation, assisting the George W. Bush campaign with resume collection for Presidential appointments. This occurred as the Supreme Court deliberated on Bush v. Gore, the case that ultimately resulted in Bush’s election victory. Numerous individuals viewed this as a grave conflict of interest for both Clarence and Ginni.

In 2008, Justices Thomas and Scalia attended a political retreat hosted by the Koch brothers, who are billionaires. Two years later, both Justices ruled in favor of Citizens United – the seminal Supreme Court decision that overturned a century-old prohibition on corporations spending unlimited funds on elections. The legal reversal was championed by wealthy conservatives such as the Kochs because it empowered them to use their limitless funds to transform themselves into some of America’s most feared political donors.

Ginni founded Liberty Central, a nonprofit lobbying organization, in 2009 with the stated mission of organizing conservative activists to oppose what it called President Barack Obama’s “leftist tyranny.” The group’s primary objective was to oppose President Obama’s health care plan, which was almost certain to end up before her husband at the Supreme Court, creating another massive and obvious potential conflict of interest.

Harlan Crowe once donated to Liberty Central $500,000. Crowe later paid several million dollars to restore a Georgia cannery where Thomas’ mother worked, at Thomas’ request.

Ginni founded Liberty Consulting, a for-profit consulting firm, in 2011 to advise donors in the post-Citizens United landscape. The irony is that Citizens United enabled Ginni to accept corporate contributions to influence policies that would be decided by her husband at the Supreme Court.

Clarence came under fire in 2011 for failing to disclose Ginni’s income and employment history. He claimed at the time that his wife’s employment and income were “inadvertently omitted due to a misinterpretation of the filing instructions.” Thomas issued seven pages of amended disclosures, including 13 years of income re-statements that included Ginni’s time at the Heritage Foundation. Ginni earned $686,589 from the Heritage Foundation between 2003 and 2007.

Ginni Thomas frequently shares fringe conspiracy theories on her personal Facebook page, including some allegedly from an anti-vax Facebook group that claimed Bill Gates orchestrated COVID-19.

Ginni reportedly asked the mayor of Clifton, Virginia to remove a banner reading “Welcome to Clifton, Where Black Lives Matter.”

Riots in Support of MAGA/Trump

On January 6, 2021, a mob of Trump supporters attacked and looted the US Capitol building. Ginni called on Congress to overturn the election results just before the riots. Ginni expressed her love and support for the rioters on her Facebook page the morning of the riots (before the violence broke out), writing “GOD BLESS EACH OF YOU STANDING UP or PRAYING!”

Trump supporters carried zip-tie handcuffs, planted IED devices, destroyed property, stole state secrets, and murdered a cop while conducting the riot.

Ginni’s personal Facebook page is frequently updated with bizarre conspiracy theories. She wrote shortly before the riots, “No one, and I mean no one, has done more to harm America than the Democrats.” She has promoted a false conspiracy theory that George Soros controls the Democratic party and is funding a campaign to undermine the US government and Donald Trump.
