Adolescent Years of Dave Grohl
avid On the 14th of January, 1969, Eric Grohl was born in Warren, Ohio. His older sister, Lisa, is his cousin. His family moved to Springfield, Virginia, when he was a tiny child. His parents Virginia and James divorced when he was seven years old. His mother brought up Dave and his sister. At the age of twelve, Dave began playing the guitar.
He grew dissatisfied with regular instruction and decided to teach himself how to play. Dave and Lisa spent their 13th summer with their cousin Tracy in Chicago. Tracy gave Dave and Lisa their first taste of punk rock that summer. In 1982, he made his debut as a member of the Naked Raygun at Chicago’s legendary Cubby Bear pub. He’d just turned thirteen.
He was the Vice President of his freshman class at Thomas Jefferson High School. He was enrolled at Bishop Ireton High School after his mother found he was consuming marijuana. He was a part of several local bands when he was in high school. He also learned to play the drums on his own.
In December 1985, Grohl, aged 16, joined Dain Bramage, a hardcore punk band. In March 1987, Grohl departed the band to join Scream, a local band. Scream was a well-known punk band on the road at the time. His band matriarch was a decade of Dave’s junior.

David Grohl’s Professional Life
Grohl auditioned for the popular Washington, D.C. punk rock band Scream when he was seventeen years old. He lied about his age to get the audition, and when he got the job offer, he was taken aback. He dropped out of school during his junior year. He toured with the band and helped create two studio albums as well as a couple of live recordings.
He made acquainted with Melvins’ drummer Buzz Osborne while playing drums with Scream. Kurt Cobain and Kris Novoselic joined Osbourn for a screening of Scream. Cobain and Novoselic’s band Nirvana was looking for a new drummer a few months later, around the time Scream disintegrated.
Grohl was notified by Osbourne that Nirvana was looking for a drummer and was given Cobain and Novoselic’s contact information. In Seattle, Grohl was invited to try out for the band. The rest of the tale is a piece of history.
In the spring of 1991, the band went to Los Angeles’ Sound City Studios to record “Nevermind” (as documented in Dave Grohl’s 2013 documentary Sound City). “Nevermind” surpassed all expectations when it was released in 1991, becoming a worldwide economic success.
Dave spent six days composing music on his own after Kurt Cobain was murdered and Nirvana was disbanded in 1994 to divert himself from the pain. On the albums, he played and recorded every instrument. He prepared 100 cassette tapes and delivered them to pals when he was completed.

He chose the nickname Foo Fighters because he did not want his name to appear on those songs. One of those cassettes made its way into the hands of a Capitol Records executive, who signed Dave right away, believing the songs were written by a full band. As a result of this technique, the Foo Fighters were established, and they’ve gone on to enjoy a lot of success in the music industry. With the Foo Fighters, Grohl has released nine studio albums. The band has sold tens of millions of CDs around the world and has received numerous Grammy nominations.
Grohl has also performed as a guest artist with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Queens of the Stone Age. Dave Grohl has also collaborated with bands such as Tenacious D, Nine Inch Nails, Killing Joke, David Bowie, and Paul McCartney on several different projects. Dave is widely considered one of the world’s friendliest and most down-to-earth superstars, despite his immense success as a musician.
Grohl was discovered to be recording with Josh Homme and John Paul Jones of Queens of the Stone Age as Them Crooked Vultures in July 2009. On August 9, 2009, at Chicago’s Metro, the three made their debut. With a surprise appearance at London’s Brixton Academy on August 26, 2009, the band made their UK debut. The band’s debut album, Them Crooked Vultures, was released in the fall of 2009.
Grohl has appeared on Saturday Night Live the most of any musician, with 13 appearances since 1992. He’s shared the stage with Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures, Mick Jagger, Tom Petty, and the Heartbreakers, among others.
In 2013, Grohl created and directed a documentary about the history of Van Nuys, California’s legendary recording studio Sound City (his directorial debut).
The documentary miniseries Sonic Highways, directed by Grohl, aired on HBO in 2014. It came out alongside the Foo Fighters’ eighth studio album. “It’s a love letter to American music history,” Grohl said of the project. Through a series of Grohl interviews, each of the eight episodes looks at the musical history of a different American city.
In early 2020, Grohl claimed that he was working on a new documentary on band van tours. Grohl’s new album, tentatively titled “What Drives Us,” digs at what motivates musicians to drop everything and spend months touring the country in a tiny van.
