Early life
Waterman was born in Clapham, London, on February 24, 1948.
He was the ninth and last child of Rose Juliana (née Saunders) and Harry Frank Waterman. The family lived at 2 Elms Road, Clapham Common South Side.
The children were Ken, Peter, Stella, Norma, and Myrna. Harry Waterman worked for British Railways as a person who took tickets.
Joy and Vera, two older sisters, had already moved out when Dennis was born, and Allen, a younger brother, had died when he was young.
When Waterman was a kid, he spent a lot of time boxing. His father used to box for fun and taught all of his sons how to do it. Dennis started boxing when he was three, with his older brother Ken.
When he was ten, Dennis joined the Caius Boxing Club. Peter, another older brother, won a boxing title in the welterweight weight class.
Waterman went to Granard Primary School, a public school on the Ashburton Estate in Putney, South-West London. Afterward, he went to Corona Stage School, a private school in Hammersmith, West London.
Career
1960
Waterman started performing as a kid. Inverness Night Train was his debut job (1960). He had two minor parts with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960.
At 13, he portrayed Winthrop Paroo in The Music Man at the Adelphi Theatre. He played William Brown in the BBC TV series William, based on Richmal Crompton’s Just William novels.
Waterman starred as Oliver Twist in the 1961 cast recording of the Lionel Bart musical Oliver! Waterman starred as Neville Finch in the 1962 CBS comedy Fair Exchange. In 1963, he starred in Go Kart Go for the Children’s Film Foundation.
Waterman was in the original cast of Edward Bond’s Saved, which premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in November 1965.
In the 1968 film adaptation of Up the Junction, he portrayed Peter, Polly’s lover (Suzy Kendall)
1980
Waterman featured in The World Cup: A Captain’s Tale for Tyne Tees Television (1982). It was the actual tale of West Auckland Town F.C., a part-time team that won the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy in 1909 and 1911. Waterman was Bob Jones, the club’s captain.
Waterman contributed most of the £1.5 million budget. Shot in the North East and Turin, Italy. In Ashington, Northumberland, goalposts and a grandstand were set up in a public park with a colliery headframe in the backdrop.
Waterman was featured in Windy City in 1982.
A brief production. Waterman had an eighteen-month romance with Amanda Redman throughout the course of the musical, and they subsequently starred in the TV series New Tricks.
Windy City closed after 250 shows. BAFTA Award-winning BBC production of Fay Weldon’s The Life and Loves of a She-Devil (1986).
Waterman’s portrayal of rugby player Albert Goldthorpe in The First Kangaroos (1988) attracted official objections from Goldthorpe’s granddaughter.

With Jan Francis and Emma Wray, Waterman starred as Thomas Gynn in Stay Lucky (1989–93),
self-made billionaire Tony Carpenter in On the Up (1990–2), and John Neil in Circles of Deceit (1995–96).
From 1997 to 1999, he starred in The Knock 3 and 4.
2000
In 2001, he played Alfred P. Doolittle in the London version of My Fair Lady . From 2003 to 2014, he appeared in every season of New Tricks. Waterman sang the New Tricks theme. He narrated Bad Lads’ Army and starred in the 2009 BBC2 drama Moses Jones.
2020
Waterman appeared in the 2019 Australian drama-comedy film Never Too Late, shot in Adelaide, South Australia.
