Early Life

On February 7, 1962, Troyal Garth Brooks was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is the youngest child of Colleen McElroy Carroll and Troyal Raymond Brooks. His father was an oil company draughtsman and his mother was a 1950s country singer who starred in the television show “Ozark Jubilee.” Garth is the product of his parents’ second unions.

He has four half-siblings and one full sibling who is older. His family held weekly talent events in which all six children were required to perform a skit or sing. Although Garth enjoyed singing as a child, sports were his primary interest. Garth participated in football, baseball, and track & field in high school.

A track scholarship was awarded to him at Oklahoma State University. His expertise was javelin throwing. In 1984, Brooks earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from college.

Personal Life

In college, Brooks met his first wife, the songwriter, Sandy Mahl. They tied the knot on May 24, 1986. The couple’s three daughters were named Taylor, August, and Allie. The couple divorced on December 17, 2001. His divorce ranked among the most expensive in history. Garth settled with Sandy for $125 million.

On December 10, 2005, Brooks remarried country singer Trisha Yearwood.

Early Career

In 1985, Brooks began playing guitar and singing in local bars and clubs after graduating from college. A lawyer for the entertainment industry traveled from Dallas to Stillwater, Oklahoma solely to see Brooks perform. He offered to record his initial demo. Brooks traveled to Nashville in quest of a record deal. Within twenty-four hours, he returned to Oklahoma. The attorney persuaded Garth to give Nashville a second chance. In 1987, Brooks relocated to Nashville.

Success

Brooks’s debut album, “Hungry Years,” was published in 1989. The album topped the country album charts at number two. This album contains his first number one single, “If Tomorrow Never Comes.” Brooks went on tour in the same year as the opening act for country music great Kenny Rogers. The second studio album by Brooks, “No Fences,” was released in 1990 and spent 23 weeks at the top of the country album charts. This album contains the songs “Friends in Low Places” and “The Thunder Rolls.” “No Fences” is Brooks’ best-selling album, with four country singles reaching number one.

Brooks’ third album, “Ropin’ the Wind,” was published in the fall of 1991 and debuted at number one on the main album charts. This was the first time country music has ever accomplished this. Brooks was also the first country musician to simultaneously have three albums in the top 20 of the Billboard 200 album chart. His fourth album, “The Chase,” was released in the fall of 1992.

In October of 1999, he released “Garth Brooks in…The Life of Chris Gaines,” the film’s soundtrack. This project was unsuccessful.

In 2019, Brooks embarked on the Dive Bar Tour, which included stops at seven dive bars in the United States.

During the COVID-19 epidemic, Brooks and Trish Yearwood performed an impromptu concert that was streamed on Facebook Live to 5.2 million viewers. Due to the number of users attempting to access it, the performance was unstable and frequently crashed. The next week, Brooks and Yearwood performed a similar concert on CBS and contributed $1 million to pandemic relief efforts. The CBS program attracted 5.6 million viewers.
