Early Years
Gloria Maria Milagrosa Fajardo Garcia was born in Havana, Cuba on September 1, 1957, and her family escaped to the United States during the Cuban Revolution. Her father served in the United States military during the Vietnam War and participated in the invasion of the Bay of Pigs; her mother was a teacher for the Dade County Public Schools. On his return from Vietnam, Estefan’s father developed multiple sclerosis, which was linked to his exposure to Agent Orange during the war. Gloria became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1974.

Personal Life
In 1976, she began a relationship with the head of the Miami Sound Machine, Emilio Estefan, and the couple wed in 1978. She freely acknowledged that her first and only boyfriend was Emilio Estefan. They have a son and a daughter and continue to reside in the Star Island neighborhood of Miami Beach, Florida.
Singing Career
Estefan and her cousin Mercedes Navarro met Estefan’s future husband Emilio Estefan Jr. in a church ensemble in 1975. Emilio created the band Miami Latin Boys earlier that year, and Gloria was introduced to him by a mutual acquaintance. The Miami Latin Boys were so impressed by Gloria and Merci’s performances that they encouraged them to join the band permanently, changing its name to Miami Sound Machine.
In 1977, Miami Sound Machine began recording and distributing albums, and their fame rose in the United States and internationally. The following year, Gloria and Emilio wed.
The band’s first Epic/Columbia album, “Eyes of Innocence,” was released in 1984, and its popular follow-up, “Primitive Love,” was released in 1985. This album spawned three Billboard Top 10 singles, including the smash hit “Conga,” “Words Get in the Way,” and “Bad Boy.” That year, they published “Summer Nights,” which was included in the massively acclaimed picture “Top Gun.” The next album released by Miami Sound Machine in 1987, “Let It Loose,” went platinum and sold three million copies in the United States alone.
This album featured their probably most popular song, “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You.” “Anything for You” achieved worldwide chart success in 1989. Since then, Estefan has been credited as a solo artist, after the band discontinued its group moniker.
Later that year, Gloria released “Cuts Both Ways,” her best-selling album to date. Several of the album’s tracks reached No. 1, including “Don’t Wanna Lose You” and “Cuts Both Ways.” On March 20, 1990, near Scranton, Pennsylvania, a semi-truck collided with Estefan’s tour bus during a snowstorm when she was on tour for the album.
Estefan had just left a meeting with President George W. Bush to discuss her participation in an upcoming anti-drug campaign. She was rushed to New York City for emergency spinal stabilization surgery. She fully healed and resumed her international tour just 10 months after the tragedy. 1991 marked her return to the top of the charts with “Into the Light.” Her single “Coming Out of the Dark” topped the charts in the United States.
The album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard album chart and went platinum in the United Kingdom and double platinum in the United States. She performed at the Super Bowl XXVI halftime performance the following year. In 1992, she published an album of her greatest hits. She went on to create 12 more studio albums and her appeal among fans has never fully waned. Estefan released “Put on Your Mask” in April 2020, a parody of her 1989 hit “Get on Your Feet.” She altered the lyrics to emphasize the necessity of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Gloria Estefan is one of the top 100 best-selling music artists of all time, with an estimated 130 million records sold globally, including 31.5 million in the United States alone. Her music career has extended over five decades and she has earned seven Grammy Awards. Since 1977, Gloria Estefan has released 24 albums and achieved 38 number-one singles throughout her career.
