Keith Douglas Sweat was born on July 22nd, 1961, in Harlem, New York City, the son of Juanita Thompson and Charles Sweat, and grew up in the neighborhood. His father was a manufacturing worker, while his mother worked in a hair salon. After his father died in 1973, Sweat was raised by his mother Juanita, and his four siblings. Keith began working at Macy’s Department Store as a night stock boy to help support his family while attending City College.
