Payne was born in Wolverhampton, England on August 29, 1993, to parents Karen and Geoff Payne. His mother was an infant nurse, and his father was a fitter. He was raised by his two older sisters, Nicola and Ruth. Payne was a sickly child who was frequently hospitalized owing to kidney disease.

Payne enjoyed running cross country while in school and competed in a variety of sports. He also began boxing instruction at the age of twelve to help boost his confidence after being bullied by some older kids.
