Childhood
Payne was born in Wolverhampton, England on August 29, 1993, to parents Karen and Geoff Payne. His mother was an infant nurse, and his father was a fitter. He was raised by his two older sisters, Nicola and Ruth. Payne was a sickly child who was frequently hospitalized owing to kidney disease.
Payne enjoyed running cross country while in school and competed in a variety of sports. He also began boxing instruction at the age of twelve to help boost his confidence after being bullied by some older kids. Career
Payne auditioned for the fifth season of “The X Factor” in 2008, when he was 14 years old, and made it through a few rounds before being cut. Judge Simon Cowell recommended he return in a few years. Payne took this advice and returned in the show’s seventh season in 2010.
He received a standing ovation for his rendition of Michael Buble’s “Cry Me a River.” Payne was teamed with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik during the boot camp portion of the competition to form a five-piece boy band. This qualified them for the competition’s “Group” division. They eventually finished third on the show.
