If you’ve ever watched Adventure Time and thought, “I like this but wish it was weirder,” you undoubtedly have eclectic tastes, but you’re also in luck. Shortly after the Cartoon Network series concluded in 2018 (but before it was resurrected in 2020), creator Pendleton Ward blessed animation fans with another show that finds silliness in apocalyptic scenarios – The Midnight Gospel.

The first season premiered on April 20, 2020, and introduced the world to spacecaster Clancy Gilroy (Duncan Trussell), who travels to various worlds to conduct interviews with the inhabitants just before they are wiped out by some catastrophic event, frequently with Clancy barely escaping with his life.

The high-concept plot is complemented by exquisite animation to the point where you could watch the series without listening to the dialogue and simply enjoy the artwork on display.

From drug legalization to religion, the show delves into a range of subjects with equal measures of comedy and pathos. As such, fans may be disappointed to learn that Netflix has yet to renew the show for a second season, despite fans petitioning the streaming service to approve additional episodes. As such, here is what we currently know about the upcoming second season of The Midnight Gospel.

Is the Midnight Gospel Season 2 All Set to Return?

As of this writing, Netflix has not yet renewed The Midnight Gospel for a second season. On April 20, 2020, the anime series will premiere, coinciding with the traditional 4/20 cannabis-themed events. That is the ideal date for a psychedelic animated series to premiere. We were hoping the showrunners would find a way to release Season 2 of The Midnight Gospel on the same day as Season 1 did last year. Regrettably, this never occurred.

Naturally, the Coronavirus still wreaks havoc on the film and television industries. We are acutely aware of current events. As a result, it would be reasonable for the showrunners to be compelled to move the release date of The Midnight Gospel Season 2. Nonetheless, given Duncan Trussell’s prior recording of hundreds of podcast episodes. This means that Season 2 of The Midnight Gospel will have an adequate amount of source material.

Who’s in the Cast for the Midnight Gospel Season 2?

The first season features excerpts from the Duncan Trussell Family Hour podcast, in which host Duncan Trussell converses with guests from diverse backgrounds about philosophy, life, and death. These excerpts are taken from the podcast, with Trussell lending his voice to Clancy Gilroy during the series’ more plot-driven segments.

With over 400 podcast episodes featuring interviews with scholars, authors, and comedians, there is undoubtedly plenty of inspiration for future Midnight Gospel episodes’ subject matter.

Trussell is joined by recurring cast members such as Stephen Root, Johnny Pemberton, Steve Little, and Maria Bamford in the voice cast. Natasha Leggero, Dr. Drew Pinsky, and Pauly Shore are among the other guest stars who appeared throughout the first season. If Netflix renews the series for a second season, fans can expect a diverse group of people to embark on the psychedelic journey through the cosmos.

What’s the Plot for the Midnight Gospel Season 2?

While fans of the first season would undoubtedly welcome the chance to see more of The Midnight Gospel, the show did end on a grand finale note, which could serve as an emotionally satisfying send-off for such an odd show. Clancy and his dog, Charlotte, are sucked into Clancy’s simulator, which then explodes. Clancy concludes the series on a train with everyone he has met thus far, with the final words, “Just be here now.”

It could be interpreted as a conclusion for Clancy and everyone he’s met, but given the show’s trippy nature, it’s not out of the question for him to travel to another plane of existence and continue interviewing people to learn more about what it means to be alive. There are hundreds more episodes of Duncan Trussell Family Hour to draw from, so the series could easily continue for an extended period if Netflix chose that route.

While it is still up in the air at the moment, perhaps fans should take a cue from the series. Rather than worrying about The Midnight Gospel’s future, you should simply be here now.

What’s the Release Date for the Midnight Gospel Season 2?

Normally, we would expect a Netflix series to release a new season approximately a year after the previous one concluded. Given that The Midnight Gospel season 1 premiered in April 2020, the most logical release date for season 2 would be in the spring or summer of 2021. Regrettably, without official confirmation of new episodes, it may take significantly longer (if it even happens at all).

To be sure, the streaming service, like every other studio, has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With that in mind, some delays are to be expected, but because The Midnight Gospel is an animated show, it should be easier to work around coronavirus-related production restrictions. It’s difficult to speculate at this point because no information about when (or if) we might be able to return to the Chromatic Ribbon is available.

We’re in Desperate Need of a Second Season

I’d like to see this concert performed again. The program is an alchemical synthesis of levity and profundity packaged in a trippy, intellectual, and spacey animated package. Each episode is thoughtful in its approach to the way words and images collide. It heightens the emotional impact of emotionally charged moments.

Consider the season one finale, which centers on the death of Trussell’s mother. The audio recording is from a podcast he did with his mother just weeks before her death. Trussell was “amazed” at how his mother was treated with respect and emotion. Once the animators obtained access to the episode, they discovered that it lacked Trussell’s creative touch:

When Will the Second Season of the Midnight Gospel Premiere on Netflix?

Netflix has not yet renewed The Midnight Gospel. However, the reception has been phenomenally positive. As a result, anticipate seeing more of Clancy shortly. The Midnight Gospel’s first season premiered on 4/20. This was a shrewd move, given the program’s bizarre nature (even if it only makes sense on the American calendar). Therefore, do not be surprised if Season 2 follows suit in 2022. However, we will require that critical green light first.

According to Trussell, [Netflix] is overjoyed with the response, and Midnight Gospel is… I’m not sure it’s comparable to any other program. “And, as you know, Netflix is Netflix,” the narrator continues. They’re all the same. We haven’t heard anything about The Midnight Gospel Season 2 yet. They are experts at concealing information.

And I understand because if they tease you about a second season, The Midnight Gospel Season 2. It will precipitate a series of events. On the other hand, they also allude to the possibility that they are not. They’re simply incredibly adept at maintaining an air of objectivity.

“However, there is so much more to that world, and we have barely begun to scratch the surface. Thus, I’d love to make a million more episodes of Midnight Gospel because we only covered the most fundamental aspects of the world and didn’t delve into some of the other exciting things happening in the Ribbon. I simply feel compelled to convey that narrative.” Russell is concerned about the situation, but he also sees the silver lining.

Will There Be Season 2 Midnight Gospel?

Immediately following the conclusion of the Cartoon Network series in 2018 (but before it was restored in 2020). Pendleton Ward, the series’ creator, delighted animation fans with Season 2 of The Midnight Gospel. It is that finds humor in apocalyptic events.
