Music Industry

Geezer Butler recruited Osbourne as the vocalist for the band Rare Breed in late 1967. Osbourne and Butler joined with guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward to form the ensemble Polka Tulk Blues after Rare Breed disbanded after only two performances.

In August of 1969, they changed their name to Black Sabbath, inspired by the film of the same name. They began to perform a strong blues type of music with gloomier and more ominous lyrics. Black Sabbath signed with Philips Records in November 1969, and their debut single “Evil Woman” was released in January 1970, followed by the release of their self-titled debut album the following month.

Despite negative critical reception and limited investment by their US record label Warner Bros. Records, their debut album was a commercial smash. Their albums Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), and Volume 4 (1972) all got similar poor reviews from critics yet were commercially huge hits.

Master of Reality was certified gold less than two months after its release, while Volume 4 was certified gold within a month of its release. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, released in 1973, was the band’s first album to get favorable reviews from the mainstream press and their fifth consecutive platinum album in the United States. Sabotage (1975), Technical Ecstasy (1976), and Never Say Die! are other albums on which Osbourne collaborated with the band (1978).

In April 1979, Osbourne’s bandmates dismissed him from the group. They highlighted his unreliability and extensive substance addiction as their grounds. Ozzy was signed to Jet Records by the band’s manager Don Arden after quitting Black Sabbath. Osbourne founded the Blizzard of Ozz in Los Angeles, California, in late 1979, and they released their debut album Blizzard of Ozz in 1980, which was billed entirely to Osbourne and marked the beginning of his solo career. His additional albums include, among others, Diary of a Madman (1981), Speak of the Devil (1982), No Rest for the Wicked (1988), and No More Tears (1991). Ordinary-Man, his first solo album in over a decade, was released on February 21, 2020.

Osbourne has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. As a member of Black Sabbath, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and as a member of the band as a solo artist, he was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame. Both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Birmingham Walk of Stars feature a star for Osbourne. In 2014, he earned the MTV Europe Music Awards Global Icon Award.
