In a statement, the hospital said, “The Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein acknowledges with sadness the news of Pele’s passing and adds that the famous player was pronounced dead on December 29 at 15:27 local time [21:27 Moscow time].”
The official cause of death was listed as “multiple organ failure due to growing colon cancer combined with [the patient’s] earlier clinical status.” Pele’s family was also extended condolences by the hospital’s press department.
Pele was readmitted to the hospital in November 2022, following surgery in September 2021 to remove a tumor from his intestines. Doctors informed him on the 22nd of the month that his cancer was advancing and that he required assistance due to renal and cardiac failure.

According to the decree, “an official national public mourning period is declared” following the death of Edson Arantes do Nascimento, more commonly known as Pele.
This period of mourning will last three days, beginning with the publication of this decree. The presidential press office of departing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro praised Pele’s contributions to sports around the world.
As the only three-time World Cup champion, “he proved by deeds that he was not only a superb player but also a magnificent citizen and patriot, who gave Brazil pride wherever he went,” the Brazilian government tweeted.
Pele died of organ failure in a private hospital in Sao Paulo following a month of treatment for his rapidly spreading colon cancer. He was a senior citizen at the age of 82.
According to the Globo television network, his burial will take place in the stadium of his former football club, Santos, in the same-named city in the state of Sao Paulo. The event will begin on Monday, January 2 at 10 a.m. local time. Celeste Arantes, Pele’s 100-year-old mother, will follow the hearse through the streets of Santos as it is escorted by police.

On Tuesday, January 3, the funeral of the legendary player will take place at the Memorial Necropole Ecumenical, the world’s tallest vertical cemetery, where many of Pele’s friends and family members are also interred. This portion of the event will be restricted to invited guests and government officials only.

Pelé’s 1966 marriage to Rosemary dos Reis Cholbi produced three children. In 1982, he divorced his first wife and began dating Xuxa, a Brazilian television presenter.
