Early Years

Russell Dominic Peters was born in Toronto, Canada, on September 29, 1970. Peters was reared with his older brother Clayton, who subsequently became his manager, in an Anglo-Indian, Catholic household. His father’s birthplace was Bombay, India. Peters was teased as a young child due to his race.

His father advised him to use words to defend himself, and he also learned how to box to improve his self-assurance.

Later, Peters realized that he had undiagnosed ADHD during most of his high school years. This resulted in bad results, and he was ultimately expelled in the tenth grade. Later, he switched to a different institution and graduated in 1989.

After being denied from Sheridan College, he began working for the school’s radio station as a disc jockey. Throughout the 1990s, “DJ Russell” would become one of Toronto’s most prominent Hip-Hop DJs.

Private Life

Peters married his fiancée, Monica Diaz, in 2010. In the same year, they had a kid and Peters published his autobiography, titled Call Me Russell. Diaz and Peters divorced in 2012. Although Peters was engaged to another woman in 2016, he began dating Jennifer Andrade, Miss Universe Honduras in 2012. They have a child together in 2019. Peters has substantial holdings in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Ontario real estate.

Career

Russell Peters performed his first stand-up routine at the age of 19 at Yuk-Comedy Yuk’s Club, just after graduating from high school. In 1992, Peters met his idol, George Carlin, by happenstance. The renowned comic advised Peters to practice his art by performing whenever possible. The advice resonated with Peters, and he spent the next four years playing throughout Canada — frequently without compensation.

Russell Peters’s appearance on CBC’s Comics created quite a stir! As a result of his routine’s racist stereotyping of both black and Indian Canadians, CBC received death threats. Nonetheless, the episode resulted in significant notoriety for the young Peters, who proceeded to perform provocative acts throughout the remainder of his career. Peters’ routine garnered him a Gemini Award, and he subsequently toured the United Kingdom.

In 1997, Peters once again appeared on television in an edition of Comedy Now! In the 2000s, his career took off, beginning with a presenting stint on BBC’s Network East Late from 2000 to 2002.

Russell Peters has indicated that he believes his breakthrough occurred in 2004 when he made a second appearance on Comedy Now! His stand-up routine was again well-received, but an unauthorized YouTube recording of the performance made him an international celebrity. The footage went viral and effectively started Peters’ career.

Although Peters was in talks with multiple networks to launch a sitcom, he finally decided to focus on live performances. Numerous sold-out performances in New York in 2006 led to the creation of his first comedy special, Outsourced. The DVD ultimately sold more than 100,000 copies. As Outsourced grew in popularity, so did the demand for his live performances.

He hosted the Canada Day Comedy Festival later in 2006. In 2007, he sold out an entire arena in Toronto and toured Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries to perform in front of troops serving overseas. In 2008, Peters hosted the Juno Awards and performed in Madison Square Garden for the first time.

His second self-funded comedy special, Red, White, and Brown, was inspired by his subsequent performance. Once more, the DVD sold more than 100,000 copies. In 2009, he presented the Juno Awards for the second time and broke ticket sales records at London’s O2 Arena.
