Russell Westbrook: Childhood

Russell Westbrook III was born on November 12, 1988, in Long Beach, California. He grew raised in Hawthorne, California, with his mother Shannon, father Russell Jr., and younger brother Raynard. Russell and his best buddy, Kelcey Barrs III, hoped to play basketball at UCLA together, but Barrs, who had an undiagnosed enlarged heart, died during a scrimmage in 2004 while the two were seniors at Leuzinger High School.

Westbrook made his varsity debut as a junior on Leuzinger’s team and averaged 25.1 points per game his senior year. He was offered a scholarship to play basketball at UCLA, where he was the team’s starter and Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year during his sophomore year. Russell married Nina Earl, a fellow UCLA basketball player he met in college, on August 29, 2015, and they welcomed son Noah on May 16, 2017, and twin girls Skye and Jordyn on November 17, 2018. Westbrook pays tribute to his late closest friend, Kelcey, by wearing a “KB3” bracelet and penning “KB3” on his Jordan Why Not? sneakers.

Russell’s trademark sneaker series, Zer0.3, includes a “KB3” patch on each shoe. Westbrook tested positive for Coronavirus in July 2020, and after following the NBA’s statutory quarantine protocol, he was eligible to return to practice on July 20th.

Russell Westbrook: Career

Russell was taken fourth overall in the NBA draught by the Seattle SuperSonics, who became the Thunder six days later after moving to Oklahoma City. Westbrook signed with the Thunder on July 5, 2008, and in his rookie season, he scored 15.3 points per game and was nominated to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

During his second year on the squad, he became a full-time starter, and the Thunder made the playoffs. Russell set a career-best with 43 points on November 26, 2010, and in 2011, he was selected to play in the NBA All-Star Game and was named to the All-NBA Second Team, both of which he would repeat in 2012.

Westbrook and Kevin Durant were awarded Western Conference co-Players of the Month in January 2016, and the following year, Westbrook started in the All-Star Game for the first time and was crowned MVP again.
