Shakira, who acknowledged her separation from Gerard Piqué earlier this year, released “monotona” with Ozuna on Wednesday. The Colombian singer’s latest song appears to reference the dissolution of her marriage to Piqué.
In the clip, she is minding her own, purchasing snacks, when she is physically blown away by Ozuna’s character, a former lover. During their encounter, her ex-lover shoots her in the chest. Despite the tragedy, she finds a method to care for her missing heart, despite the fact that it is being trampled on the street, demonstrating perseverance even in the midst of profound pain.
The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer teased the release of the song for several days by posting herself singing a cappella renditions of its lyrics, such as “No fue culpa tuya/Ni tampoco ma/Fue culpa de la monotona.” (“It was neither your nor my fault; it was monotony’s fault.”)
Shakira has also published a trailer for the music video, which has the singer wearing sunglasses in a supermarket while her song “Te Felicito” with Rauw Alejandro plays in the background.
She posted a video of the single’s cover art on Instagram, which depicts the song’s title in front of a heart with a sword through it. “A modest king with a great queen,” Ozuna said in the caption. In another photo, Shakira appears to be holding a human heart.
