Should We Be Following Celebrity Weight Loss Diets?

While personalized meal plans have caught on in recent years, there’s no denying that many still look up to celebrities when it comes to weight loss strategies. In fact, one can go as far as declaring society has an obsession with stars who have undergone drastic weight changes and slimmed down. Being in the public eye, celebrity dieters are largely viewed through the lens of appearance and desirability instead of health and wellness, which then promotes extreme diets that are either short-term or simply don’t work for everyone.

However, there are still public figures who lost weight healthily as they focused on developing long-term habits for diet and nutrition. So before you try to copy your favorite star’s weight loss strategy to a T, it helps to determine whether their approach is doable and sustainable for your health and lifestyle. Here are a few celebrity diets we can look at as examples.

Rebel Wilson

Since Rebel Wilson’s comedic persona as Pitch Perfect’s “Fat Amy” was strongly linked to her size, she surprised everyone when she lost 33 pounds in 2016. Since then, the actress and comedian has maintained a healthy lifestyle, even committing to 2020 as her “Year of Health.” Wilson eats a plant-based, nutrient-rich diet anyone can follow, focusing on fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to stay full for longer. Her successful weight loss can also be attributed to the Mayr method. Less of a diet than a healthy relationship with food, the strategy enhances gut health and promotes weight loss by encouraging mindful eating habits, such as taking time with food and avoiding stress eating.

Alec Baldwin

After American actor Alec Baldwin was diagnosed as overweight and pre-diabetic in 2022, it encouraged him to cut down on foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates—leading to reduced weight and lowered blood sugar levels at the same time. His weight loss journey benefits anyone regardless of age or health status as it helps reduce overall caloric intake, but it’s also an essential reminder to identify whether your weight gain is classified as overweight vs obesity. Knowing where your body mass index (BMI) lies in the weight classification can help you watch out for risks concerning your heart health, blood pressure, and blood sugar. This can then guide you toward crafting a diet that not only sheds your excess pounds but also prevents or manages said health risks.

Khloé Kardashian

On top of a rigorous workout to attain her toned figure, Khloé Kardashian’s weight loss throughout the years was also influenced by a diet plan that her nutritionist, Dr. Philip Goglia, put together. Khloé’s  low-carb diet is meant to restrict carbohydrate-rich foods like white bread, pasta, and processed sugars since these are typically empty calories. Instead, she replaces these with quality sources of protein and fiber to lessen cravings and fuel up for workouts. While limiting your carb intake can help with initial weight loss, it’s still advisable to follow this diet with the guidance of a dietitian or nutritionist since very low-carb diets like keto can have side effects, including fatigue, constipation, headaches, and reduced athletic performance.

Blake Lively

While Blake Lively’s weight loss wasn’t as extreme as the other examples, many are still curious about her diet as she quickly got back in shape after giving birth to her daughter in 2014. Readers would be delighted, however, to learn that the actress’s diet doesn’t rely on severely restricting her calories or depriving herself of her favorite foods like pizza, pasta, or mac and cheese. Instead, Lively swears by  healthy eating habits that combine her love of food, fitness, and cooking. These include eating a healthy breakfast to reduce hunger throughout the day and eating the right type of carbs like sweet potatoes, gluten-free oatmeal, and fruits.

What these ultimately tell us is that healthy celeb diets that focus on nutrients rather than calorie restriction, or complete elimination of food groups, are worth following. Nonetheless, these diets may work differently for you, so it’s better to simply treat them as a blueprint that you can put your own spin on, depending on your daily lifestyle.
