As it has emerged as one of the most influential social media platforms, TikTok has occasionally revitalized and repurposed older music in unexpected ways. Despite being decades old, the song “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac was an early viral hit. Now, TikTok users are flocking to a song they call “Car Dragon,” but it’s not actually new.
What is TikTok’s “Car Dragon” song?
The most popular song on TikTok right now is “Report Card” or “Yahhh!” by Soulja Boy. On the platform, the song’s name has been changed to “Car Dragon” for unclear reasons. The first video featuring the song was uploaded in early February 2022 and features the user’s dog opening and closing his mouth in time with the song’s lyrics.
This video has received more than 4 million views, but it has inspired a challenge in which participants film themselves before and after they look up the term “car dragon.” Typically, the users in the after videos appear horrified, but it is unclear as to how they are reacting. If you look up the term yourself, you’ll notice that the majority of results are of automobiles and dragons, with the occasional disturbing sexual combination of the two.
Ultimately, however, the trend appears to exist primarily for its own sake, with no larger significance apparent. People are filming reaction videos as if a search for the term results in something truly insane, but this does not appear to be the case. Instead, the trend perpetuates itself almost as if it were an elaborate hoax.
“Report Card” is Merely One Example of a Growing Trend.
All of these videos feature the song by Soulja Boy, but it is unclear how the song and the trend are connected. It appears that someone started the trend of using the song, and the majority of users followed suit. TikTok can be an excellent platform for introducing new artists, but it can also be a place to rediscover an old favorite song in a completely new context.
The “Car Dragon” Fad is Completely Arbitrary.
The “Car Dragon” trend is completely random, like many of the trends that have spread across TikTok in recent days, including a brownie recipe that gets posted in comments for no reason. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to the phrase or the reactions that have been filmed in response. Rather, it appears to be a trend that exists solely to be a trend.
In recent weeks, these trends have become increasingly popular on TikTok, and while some users may want trends to have deeper meanings, it’s clear that others simply enjoy messing around on the platform. If you enjoy creating chaos, the “Car Dragon” trend is likely for you.
