Top Gun 2, also known as Top Gun: Maverick, will soon be released following multiple delays caused primarily by the COVID pandemic.
But if the global premiere of Top Gun: Maverick in San Diego on Wednesday, May 3 is any indication, the much-anticipated film will be well worth the wait.
Tom Cruise, who will reprise one of his most iconic roles as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, made an amazing touchdown in a helicopter that said “Tom Cruise: Top Gun: Maverick” and landed on a US aircraft carrier for the premiere of the sequel to the 1986 blockbuster.
Later, the actor acknowledged that someone else was piloting the helicopter on this occasion.
“Today is not the day. After going onto the USS Midway carrier, he stated, “I do fly that helicopter, but not today.”
It was also stated that in preparation for filming, Cruise subjected the cast to “grueling” flight training.
In behind-the-scenes footage from the film, Cruise explains that, at his request, the cast underwent “comprehensive” aviation training.
“We worked with the Navy and Top Gun school to figure out how to shoot it practically,” Cruise stated, adding, “Because if we do it, we’ll fly in F-18s.”
“I had to educate them about cinematography and lighting for them to understand what would look beautiful on-camera… I am quite proud of what we have all done. Each one of them is remarkable.”
The Mission: Impossible actor is not the only one reprising his part from Tony Scott’s 1986 masterpiece; Val Kilmer will also reprise his role as his former archrival Iceman. Miles Teller, one of the numerous new cast members, portrays the son of Maverick’s deceased companion Goose.

Several trailers and first-look pictures for the film have already been released, and in January 2022, Cruise stunned AFC Championship game spectators on CBS with a special video featuring footage from the sequel.
The trailer provided fans with a preview of Cruise riding a motorcycle in a sequence reminiscent of a famous scene from the original film, as well as other exciting pictures of the actor flying a jet.
In addition, Cruise has already stated that the film will be “everything you hope it will be.”
“The film has just the appropriate amount of nostalgia for the original, while also continuing the tale and characters,” he told Today.
So, without further ado, here is all you need to know about the eagerly awaited sequel to Top Gun.
Top Gun 2: Maverick Release Date
The release date for Top Gun: Maverick in the United Kingdom is Wednesday, 25 May 2022.
This occurs less than a month after the film’s premiere at CinemaCon on April 28, 2022.
On May 18, 2022, the film will also screen out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
The release date of the sequel was originally set for July 12, 2019, however, it was moved back almost a year to June 26, 2020, and then again to July 17, 2020.
Due to the current coronavirus pandemic and its impact on the entertainment business, the film’s release date was pushed back to December 23, 2020, and then again to 2021. The film was originally scheduled for release in July, however, it was pushed back to November before its ultimate release date.
This suggests that the sequel will be released 36 years after the original. According to Variety, the original delay was caused by Paramount Pictures’ desire for additional time to portray flight sequences with new aircraft and technology.
Tom Cruise announced the initial news on Instagram “I am aware that some of you have waited 34 years. Unfortunately, there will be a delay.”
Cruise stated that he doesn’t “make movies just to create movies” if you’re wondering why it took so long.
Production occurred between May 2018 and June 2019.

Tom Cruise will reprise his classic 1980s role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell following 35 years of rumors and speculation.
Tom Cruise started on The Graham Norton Show, “Studios and audiences wanted me to do it for years, and then Jerry Bruckheimer wanted to do it, so we discussed it and came up with some nice ideas.
“At that very moment, I thought, “Now is the time if I’m going to accomplish this.”
The new film will focus on the friendship between Cruise’s Maverick and Val Kilmer’s Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, portrayed by Val Kilmer.
Jerry Bruckheimer previously revealed that Tom Cruise was adamant about Val Kilmer’s comeback, adding to People: “He said, ‘We must have Val, we must have him back.'” We must include him in the film.
“He was the prime mover. Everyone wanted him, but Tom was determined that if he made another Top Gun film, Val must be in it.”
Joseph Kosinski told Entertainment Weekly, “The competition and relationship between Iceman and Maverick is one of the defining elements of the first film.”
As a fan, I would like to know how this connection has progressed because it is vital to the Top Gun franchise.
Miles Teller (Whiplash, Fantastic Four) will also play Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Goose and Maverick’s new protégé.
Teller stated about his character on The Graham Norton Show: “The plot, which takes place 35 years after the last picture, is fantastic because my character is now an adult and Maverick has a rich past. The film is extraordinary.”
Ed Harris (as a senior admiral), Jon Hamm (as a vice admiral), Lewis Pullman (pilot trainee Bob), Jennifer Connelly (as Maverick’s new girlfriend Penny), and Glen Powell (pilot trainee ‘Hangman’) have all joined the cast of Top Gun: Maverick.

Connelly plays a single mother who owns and operates a tavern near the military post. Manny Jacinto will reprise his role as Manny Jacinto from A Good Place in a new pilot.
It appeared at one point that Kilmer had confirmed Gene Hackman’s appearance, however, this is not the case. Michael Ironside will not return as Lieutenant Commander Rick ‘Jester’ Heatherly, as his relationship with director Jerry Bruckheimer is reportedly strained.
Jon Hamm recently stated to Men’s Journal regarding his character: “It’s not a father figure in the same way that Viper was for Tom. He is the air commander of the fighter wing. He has a great deal of responsibility and authority. As expected, there is friction when it comes into contact with Maverick. I am the source of friction.”
Top Gun 2: Maverick Plot
During CinemaCon, exclusive footage of the first 13 minutes of the film was screened, offering viewers a taste of what to expect. Mild Top Gun: Maverick opening scene spoilers ahead.
Ed Harris’s Admiral informs Tom Cruise’s Maverick that the Top Gun program is being terminated. Maverick, who has never been one to follow the rules, disregards the Admiral’s warnings and boards his jet. His Mach 10 journey, however, appears to have ended tragically as a mid-air explosion appears to have killed the pilot.
Fortunately, Maverick’s survival is revealed when he enters a country diner and asks, “Where am I?”
“Earth,” a young boy replies.
“After more than 30 years of duty as one of the Navy’s best aviators, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the boundaries as a brave test pilot and avoiding advancement in rank that would ground him.
Maverick sees Lt Bradley Bradshaw, call sign ‘Rooster’, the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt Nick Bradshaw, alias ‘Goose’, when he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun grads for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen.
“Faced with an uncertain future and the demons of his past, Maverick is dragged into a confrontation with his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that requires the ultimate sacrifice from those who are chosen to fly it.”
To keep up with the times, the film will concentrate on the declining days of dogfighting and the dawn of drone warfare. It is expected that, as in the original, American and Russian pilots will engage in combat.
Top Gun: Maverick also features Tom Cruise as the true pilot. He wished to pilot the fighter jets for genuine and requested that the feats be “realistic, no CGI.”
Later, he informed the SDCC crowd, “Everything you see in this film is authentic.” “We’re collaborating with the Navy, and all of the flying you see in this image is true. I wanted to give you all a sense of what it’s like to be in that aircraft.
“This is an ode to aviation.”
It is not the first time that Cruise has performed his aerial stunts; he learned to fly a helicopter for the 2018 film Mission Impossible: Fallout.

Top Gun 2: Maverick Trailers
In 2019, the first trailer was screened at Comic-Con International. With shots that mimicked the science-fiction film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, fans picked out the similarities.
The next Christmas, a second trailer was broadcast, and LEGO even created a replica of it.
A second trailer for the Super Bowl 2022 was published.
The most recent and longest trailer for the film to date was published on March 29, 2022.
You may view the video below.
In addition to the trailer, the first thirteen minutes of the film were revealed at CinemaCon. The footage depicts Maverick disobeying his superior’s (Ed Harris) orders after he is informed that the Top Gun program is being terminated, resulting in a near-fatal mishap.
Cruise released the new footage at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, where he also took the stage in a crowded Hall H.
In the meantime, several posters for the film have also been released; see the one below.
How to watch Top Gun 2: Maverick
Initially, the film will only be available in theatres, so fans who wish to view it at home will have to wait a bit.
The film will presumably become accessible for streaming on Paramount Plus about three months following its theatrical debut, but an exact date has not yet been determined.
This date will likely be when Paramount Plus appears in the United Kingdom this summer, as the streaming service is scheduled to launch as part of Sky Cinema at no additional cost to customers.
The Wall Street Journal reported in January 2021 that Netflix and Apple TV+ had attempted to acquire the film’s distribution rights during the pandemic, but Paramount had refused to sell them.
What Was the Original Top Gun Movie About?
The 1980s classic follows US Naval Aviator Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, a brilliant pilot who disregards the regulations and has a tight relationship with co-pilot Goose (played by Anthony Edwards).
He is recruited to an elite fighter school, where he competes against classmate Iceman (Val Kilmer) for the prized Top Gun trophy. Oh, and he also begins to develop feelings for the attractive instructor, Charlie (Kelly McGillis).
