Where is Kai Lawrence Now?

Kai Lawrence is now incarcerated. He is incarcerated at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton. In 2019, a jury found the Hitchhiker guilty of murdering Joseph Galfy following a four-week trial. He was convicted of first-degree murder and given a 57-year prison sentence.

In February of 2013, Kai Lawrence grabbed a ride with a man named Jett Simmons McBride. During the journey, McBride crashed into a pedestrian, prompting Kai to assist the individual. A woman also arrived to assist Kai and the pedestrian. Then, McBride exited the vehicle and attempted to hit the woman.

Then, Lawrence drew a hatchet from his bag and hit McBridge in the head with it. Following the event, he was questioned by the local media and provided his account of what transpired. The six-minute interview was published on YouTube and went viral, causing Kai to become famous overnight.

Then, he became the focus of countless memes and was called by Justin Bieber’s team to collaborate on a song. A producer of Keeping Up with the Kardashians proposed creating a reality show about Kai. He was also featured in numerous follow-up interviews with news networks and lauded as a hero.

Kai was Arrested a Few Months After Going Viral

After his video went viral for three months, the Hitchhiker was arrested. He was arrested for the murder of 73-year-old New Jersey attorney Joseph Galfy. The deceased attorney was discovered at his residence with his head smashed and wearing only his underpants and socks. The police discovered a note including Kai’s phone number at the crime scene.

Kai was captured on surveillance footage hugging Galfy after the latter purchased a railway ticket for him. Kai admitted to the murder but claimed self-defense. According to him, he met the victim in Times Square, and after dinner, Gulfy told him to remain at his apartment.

Kai said to the authorities that Galfy sexually abused him while he slept, prompting him to strike Galfy with his elbows and hands. Nonetheless, the evidence gathered by the detectives indicated differently, and Kai was convicted of murder.
