While he is tired of living alone, the 71-year-old author mentioned that he maintains a regular, if somewhat mundane, routine and makes an effort to stay healthy. This appears to be finally paying off.

Martin had plenty of time to spend with his characters after the majority of distractions were removed and international travel was replaced by Zoom calls. As of June 2020, he was concentrating his efforts on Cersei and Tyrion Lannister, Ser Barristan Selmy, Asha Greyjoy (known as Yara in the HBO television series), and Areo Hotah, the Martell guard’s captain. Arya Stark was also mentioned, and as usual, she has murderous intentions.

Is There a 2022 Update Available?

Martin stated in November 2021 that he was currently working on The Winds of Winter in addition to other projects. Since then, several additional posts have been published, but there has been no mention of the current hot topic, namely the release of the sixth ASoIaF book.

Rumors on the internet recently suggested November 2023 as a possible release date for The Winds of Winter, which was allegedly leaked by the author. Martin’s website, however, makes no mention of such a leak, and there is no official source that does. If the author commented about a new release day, it was probably in private.

Martin has previously enraged some members of his fan base by exaggerating his publication dates; as a result, he has refrained from providing specific release dates for The Winds of Winter.

Martin stated in April 2015 that he desired publication before the sixth season of HBO’s Game of Thrones airing in 2016 (which was to include material from the book); in September 2015, statements made by the novel’s Spanish editor and Polish translator indicated that publication was expected in 2016.

Martin confirmed in January 2016 that he had missed his publisher’s end-of-year deadline for the book’s release before the HBO show’s sixth season. He added that the book was still “months away from completion… if the writing goes well.” Martin also disclosed that in May 2015, he believed an October 2015 deadline was attainable, and that in September 2015, he believed the end-of-year deadline remained attainable.

He confirmed that portions of the book’s plot will be revealed in the upcoming season of Game of Thrones, but one of the show’s showrunners, David Benioff, stated that while certain key elements will remain consistent, the show will depart significantly from the book in numerous ways. Martin announced in February 2016 that he would suspend all editing projects except for Wild Cards and would refrain from writing teleplays, screenplays, short stories, introductions, or forewords until The Winds of Winter was completed.

Martin had previously stated that The Winds of Winter would be released in 2017. He also stated the previous year that he believed the same thing would happen, and later that year he confirmed he was “still months away” from finishing the book, implying it may not be published until 2018 or later, possibly preceded by Fire & Blood, the book on the history of House Targaryen.

Martin confirmed in April 2018 that Fire & Blood would be released before The Winds of Winter, which was not scheduled for release in 2018; he indicated that Fire & Blood was the book his publisher desired next. He confirmed at least four times in 2018 that he had not abandoned work on The Winds of Winter.

Martin stated in April 2019 that writing “has been going extremely well recently,” and in May, he stated that if he does not have a copy of The Winds of Winter ready for the 2020 Worldcon in New Zealand, he has granted Air New Zealand permission to imprison him on New Zealand’s White Island until he completes it.

Martin stated in October 2019 that he hoped to complete The Winds of Winter “in the relatively near future,” and following the announcement of a Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, on which Martin serves as an executive producer, Martin stated that there was still much work to be done on the series but that he would not write any scripts until The Winds of Winter was completed.

Martin stated in a January 2020 interview that, in addition to his primary project, The Winds of Winter, he is collaborating with Nnedi Okorafor on a television adaptation of her science fantasy novel Who Fears Death, for which he agreed to serve as executive producer in 2017.
